Golden Syrup

Sara Retallick (aka Golden Syrup) is an artist, musician and producer based in Melbourne, Victoria.

Her work explores listening and human perception of sound and time in different listening situations. Through sound, photography, video and installation, her practice synthesises fieldwork, collaboration and expanded listening.

Retallick’s eponymous album ‘Golden Syrup’ is a sharply erudite collection of sounds and songs, brandished in the gleam of her starkly HD reflections of her environment and informed by her multidisciplinary studies in sound and art. The disarming directness of the songs lies in her unflinchingly bold vocal delivery; a darkly ornate musical infrastructure ominously arches around this performance. Every beat and tone a cluster of inseparable synthetic and organic elements, piled delicately into the night sky. A sense of the modern Australian landscape becomes overwhelmingly tangible in the live show, which features her curiously engaging video work making for an affecting multi-sensory experience.

Debut Golden Syrup performances took place at Hobart’s incredible Dark Mofo Festival.
